Several SFUSD high schools – San Francisco International, Galileo, Abraham Lincoln, Thurgood Marshall, and Mission—provide recently arrived immigrant English learners with Designated ELD and sheltered content courses along with orientation. The curriculum includes transition support and addresses academic gaps due to differences in national schooling systems or gaps in prior schooling. Newcomer students receive two periods of English Language Arts (ELA)/Designated ELD and remaining content classes through Sheltered English utilizing SDAIE and Integrated ELD with primary language support when available. Students identified as having limited or interrupted formal education in their home countries (SLIFE) may receive a supplemental intervention literacy course. Additionally, until reclassified, all English learner students at every high school receive Designated ELD instruction. All school sites offer a variety of courses that address the English language development of students and that best fit into their school course portfolios.
